School-Family-Community Partnership Meeting Minutes

January

Remember: Together we make a difference!

School-Family-Community Partnership Meeting Minutes for Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Attendees – 9 adults and 6 students
Items discussed:

  1. Career Fair –  Mrs. Stacks asked for ideas concerning the career fair for this year.  St. Paul School tries to host a career fair every other year but with declining enrollment it is more difficult to have participants willing to travel here. Attendees suggested various mechanisms to provide information about careers to the students of St. Paul School.  The health fair this spring on St. Paul Island hosted by APIAI was mentioned and the idea that Health Field careers could be highlighted and information regarding educational opportunities and careers could be given to students.    Other opportunities were mentioned:  Bering Sea Days, Future Educators Symposium, KUHB, visits from the city to discuss employment opportunities, Coast Guard, etc.  It was decided that instead of a one-day display of careers students would be surveyed to determine interests and strengths and then the school would work with the community to discuss relevant career opportunities with students.

  1. KUHB Planning - Mr. Ferrari is offering a radio class this semester with 7th grade students. They will be working on the production of Pribilof Post Card, PSA’s, interviews, and hopefully this will lead to more students working at the radio.
  1. Gymnasium Renovation – Mrs. Stacks explained the discussion that the school board had in January concerning closure of the gym because of safety concerns.  She explained all of the grants that had been applied for e.g., Impact Aid, Capital Improvement, Rasmusson, State Allocation from Senator Hoffman and Rep. Edgmon.  These will be applied for again this year along with Senator Murkowski’s and Senator Begich’s special projects .  Any fundraising ideas or help will be appreciated.

  1. Summer Science Camp – The summer science camp will be hosted on St. Paul this year during early August.  St. George and St. Paul students are invited to attend.  Aquilina indicated that the Summer Science Camp will coincide with the 100 year Fur Seal Treaty Anniversary so there will be several visitors on island during this time.  CBSFA and APICDA are once again being asked to support the project.
  1. Bering Sea Days –  Bering Sea Days will be April  26 – 28 at the St. Paul School.  Topics will include:  Sea Ice, Crab Research, Wooly Mammoth, Fur Seal, Birds, and Halibut.  Aquilina indicated that, once again, we will be fortunate to have experts in these areas working with our students.  St. George students, 5 – 8, will hopefully be able to participate, too.  CBSFA is being asked to help support this.

  1. Indian Education Policies and Procedures- Mrs. Stacks presented copies of the IPP’s that the school board approved at their January meeting.  It was explained that these were required for Impact Aid funding and that the purpose of the IPP’s was to insure that Native students were receiving a quality education and that their parents’ had opportunity to be involved in their children’s education.
  1. Technology Planning- Mrs. Rodgers presented the current Technology Plan and Acceptable Use Policies for review.  Both of these need to be updated and she requests student, parent, and community input.  Both of these will be reviewed at the February meeting.

  1. Miscellaneous-  Aquilina asked about the process for choosing subjects to be offered to students.  Mrs. Stacks explained the process and clarified in a follow-up email the areas considered when planning the schedule:

1) State Requirements
2) Board Requirements
3) Student Survey conducted each spring- carpentry, art, and small engines  have come from this survey
4) Parent Survey conducted each spring- science classes relevant to the environment, Russian -  offering careers, carpentry, Driver's Ed, and advanced math have come from this survey.
5) Disscussion from Partnership meetings – Aquilina’s mentioning student requests for Aleut class helped determine that Aleut class would be offered last Fall.
6) Staff Certifications/Skills/Interests of Teachers- NCLB mandates that teachers be Highly Qualified in all core subjects
7) Grant Opportunities

All of these are taken into account when planning the courses in the Spring for the following year

The February meeting will be Tuesday, February 8 at 6:30 PM in the library.  Please plan to join us if you can.  Remember:  “Together we make a difference!”
